Jones and Kilbourn families papers, 1747-1959.

Papers documenting several generations of two families, principally Eaton Jones (1729-1791), Eaton Jones (1762-1838), Charles Jones (1797-1891), George Eaton Jones (1849-1927), Maria M. Jones (1851-1930), and Eaton Jones (1897-1971). George Eaton Jones married Mary Braman (1864-1927), a granddaughter of Payne Kenyon Kilbourne (1815-1859). In addition, there are third-party papers relating to the American Revolution (lists of arms issued and other documents) and 19th century Litchfield in the late 1700s. Collection includes correspondence, financial papers, deeds, genealogical materials, photographs, mss., lists, and autographs and letters of noted individuals. Papers of Eaton Jones (1729-1791), include deeds documenting his land transactions; papers of his son Eaton Jones (1761-1838), include estate papers, receipts, and pledge made with Charles Buell in 1821 regarding Jack Jacklin, an African American. Eaton's son Charles Jones (1797-1891), was a farmer who married Maria Buell (1815-1891), a descendant of Peter Buell (1739-1797) who served in the American Revolution . The collection contains commission papers of Peter Buell and his son Jonathan Buell (1776-1862), Peter Buell's estate papers, and land deeds. Charles Jones and Maria Buell Jones had two children: George Eaton Jones (1849-1927) and Maria M. Jones (1851-1930). George Eaton Jones was a farmer, banker, and businessman. He married 1st: Eva Freelon Colvocoresses; 2nd: Mary Braman (1864-1927) and they had one son, Eaton Jones (1897-1971) and settled in New Hampshire. The collection contains papers relating to George, his second wife, and two children, The collection also includes papers regarding the Kilbourn family, chiefly correspondence of Payne Kenyon Kilbourne (1815-1859) and Elizabeth Cone Kilbourne (1816-1900), their daughters Leila Kilbourne (1850-1861) and Julia Kilbourne Braman (1843-1892) and Julia's husband William H. Braman (1831-1912); and Mary Braman Jones (1864-1927), daughter of Julia Kilbourne and William Braman. Payne Kenyon Kilbourne was a poet, newspaper publisher, and author of several books and his papers contain research into genealogical and Litchfield topics. Also of note are account pages of Payne Kenyon Kilbourn's grandfather Giles Kilborn (1728-1824), joiner and carpenter who was involved in the construction of several Litchfield houses. Includes a noteworthy collection of papers regarding Aaron Kilborn (1798-1876), a machinist, of New Haven, Conn., who in 1840 contracted to make machinery for the Georgia state penitentiary in Milledgeville which resulted in his going there to oversee installation, later resulting in other work both with the prison and other Georgia state facilities. In 1849 he returned to New Haven resuming his former business. He was married to Amira Richardson Kilborn (1798-1861) and the collection contains his papers, chiefly extensive correspondence (1840-1847) with his wife, family members, and officials and others in Georgia. Also includes papers relating to Litchfield lawyer and judge Jedidiah Strong and several items signed by noted individuals such as Benedict Arnold and Aaron Burr.
